Hanscom Leads by Example with PV Facades

Hanscom Field Civil Air Terminal South Facade

Hanscom Field is a public airport operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) in Bedford, MA. As a state-run facility, it has recently had the advantage of participating in the Commonwealth’s Leading by Example Program (LBE) which works to reduce the overall environmental impacts of state government operations. The PV system at the Hanscom Field Civil Air Terminal includes a rooftop PV array and also incorporates façade and awning arrays, thereby prominently displaying the latest initiative of the LBE program and Massachusetts’ commitment to investing in renewable energy.

Solar Design Associates worked closely with Gale Associates to provide solar electric systems at the terminal building that met the needs of Massport and the Leading by Example program. Combined energy output from the PV systems supplies 10 percent of the energy used at the Civil Air Terminal.  SDA provided technical and financial feasibility assessments, performance calculations, complete PV system design and engineering, interconnection assistance, construction administration, and complete PV and DAS systems commissioning.
